― Eris, Ep 189

Eris is the Goddess of Discord, the first child of Zeus and Hera, the older sister of Hephaestus, Ares, and Hebe, and older half-sister of Athena, Artemis, and Apollo. Eris was disowned by her family due to her destructive and unpredictable nature.

She is first represented by sinister yellow eyes in Episode 131, described as the "feeling" Persephone has lived with, before being introduced at the end of Episode 188.

Appearance

Eris appears as a young woman with yellow skin that becomes a wine red at her scalp and extremities. Eris is bald save for a single feather at the top of her head. She has large black wings that have large yellow eyes at the back. Eris' feet and hands have sharp claws at the ends. In her first appearance, Eris wears a tight, thigh-length black dress with a high neck.

Background

Eris is the first child of Zeus and Hera. While there is little known about her past, she was eventually disowned by her family due to her destructive and chaotic nature. At one point, she tried to kill Hera, something Hera has not forgiven her for. As noted by Hades, she hibernates for long periods of time to perform more concentrated acts of wrath. It would seem that everyone who knows of her also fears her, including her whole family.

Personality

Hades describes Eris as destructive, unpredictable, and impossible to control. While she is not particularly violent, Eris can use anyone's darkest secrets against them. Over the years, the Gods and Goddesses have done their best to appease Eris to avoid any fallout, showing that Gods such as Zeus, Hades, Hera, and Demeter are just a few that are deeply afraid of her.

Relationships

Parents

Zeus

Eris is the first child of Zeus and Hera. While it is unknown what their relationship was like when she was a child, in the present day Eris has been disowned by her family due to her dangerous behavior. During the last half of Demeter and Persephone's trial, she arrives unexpectedly. Zeus appears to immediately recognize her laughter, and becomes fearful over the realization that she has arrived. Eris then encourages Demeter to tell her father how she truly feels about him, telling her to "really let him have it."

Hera

Eris is the first child of Zeus and Hera. While it is unknown what their relationship was like when she was a child, it has evidently become strained after Eris attempted to kill Hera for an unknown reason. Eris has been disowned by her parents and has stayed away for years. During the last half of Demeter and Persephone's trial, Eris' sudden appearance frightens Hera, who is seen crouched and shielding Hebe in her arms. As Demeter goes on with the trial, Eris teasingly wishes she had a mother who loved her the way Demeter loved Persephone. Upon hearing this, Hera yells from the second floor that Eris tried to kill her, but Eris is annoyed that Hera has been holding that against her.

Siblings

Ares

Ares is Eris' younger brother. There is no information regarding their relationship.

Hephaestus

Hephaestus is Eris' younger brother. There is no information regarding their relationship.

Hebe

Hebe is Eris' youngest sister. While there is no information regarding their relationship, Hebe appeared afraid upon her arrival, clinging onto Hera.

Athena

Athena is Eris's younger half-sister. There is no information regarding their relationship.

Artemis

Unknown to Artemis for many years, Eris is Artemis' older half-sister from Zeus. There is no information regarding their relationship prior to Artemis discovering the truth about her parentage. During the last day of Persephone and Demeter's trial, Apollo reveals himself and Artemis to be Zeus' children, extending their family tree.

Apollo

Unknown to Apollo for some time, Eris is Apollo's half-sister from Zeus. There is no information regarding their relationship prior to Apollo discovering the truth about her parentage. Apollo arrives during the last day of Persephone and Demeter's trial to capture Eris after she interrupts but after Persephone hits his head with a vase, Eris becomes free. Apollo then reveals himself and Artemis to be Zeus' children, extending their family tree.

Extended Family

Hades

Hades is Eris' uncle through Zeus. While there is no information regarding their relationship, Hades holds Persephone closely once Eris arrives to witness the trial. He then warns Persephone about Eris' dangerous nature, and how it is best to appease Eris to avoid any fallout.

Poseidon

Poseidon is Eris' uncle through Zeus. While there is no information regarding their relationship, he was shown to be afraid once he realized she had arrived at the courtroom.

Demeter

Demeter is Eris' aunt through Hera. While there is no information regarding their relationship, Demeter is shown to be just as afraid of Eris as the rest of her family. Demeter was deemed to be Eris' "favorite" during the trial. Eris encouraged her to keep talking about how her father had wronged her over the years. When she begged Zeus to only punish her and spare Persephone, Eris mockingly states she wished for a mother who loved her as much as Demeter loved Persephone. Eris then demands Demeter tell the story of Persephone's birth and the blessings she received from the Goddesses. Unknown to Demeter or anyone else, Eris would be one of the Goddesses that blessed Persephone as an infant.

Persephone

Persephone is Eris' future aunt through her marriage to Hades. Persephone was unknowingly blessed by Eris as an infant. Over the years, Persephone would be haunted by "a feeling" that became harder to ignore as she grew up and even dreamt of eyes spying on her. As Persephone's trial was coming to an end, Eris makes an appearance. Much to Persephone's horror, she recognizes her eyes from her nightmares. As Eris demands that Demeter tell the story of Persephone's birth and blessings, Eris reveals that she had also blessed Persephone.

It is later shown that at some point during Persephone's exile, she has been living with Persephone, showing that Persephone at the very least tolerates her, and Eris is shown to care more for Persephone. She also tries to offer some advice to Persephone, saying wrath has it's place in the world, and how she doesn't need to be the one to make everyone happy.

Trivia

  • In Greek Mythology, after Eris was not invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, she gave Zeus the Apple of Discord to give to the most beautiful Goddesses, Hera, Athena, or Aphrodite. Zeus puts the decision on Prince Paris of Troy, who choses Aphrodite when she offers to give him the most beautiful woman, Queen Helen of Sparta. This would lead to the Trojan War.
  • While powerful, Hades states Eris must sleep for long periods of time due to the acts of wrath she commits.
  • Like her Grandmother Metis, Eris has wings that are seemingly always present.
  • It is unknown where Eris resides in after being disowned by her family.
  • It is unknown what exactly led to Eris attempting to kill Hera years ago. While Hera is shown to still be angry over this, Eris is upset over how long her mother plans on holding it against her.
