― Artemis, Ep 11

Artemis is the Goddess of the Hunt and a member of The Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood (TGOEM). She is daughter of Leto and Zeus, older twin sister of Apollo, half-sister of Eris, Ares, Athena, Hephaestus, and Hebe, and aunt of Asclepius and Eros.

Appearance[]

Artemis is a goddess with violet skin and darker purple hair. Her hair is long and styled with bangs, and she frequently wears it down or in a half-up half-down style. While on Olympus, she is often seen wearing sweatpants and workout clothing in shades of purple and white.

While in the Mortal Realm, Artemis wears a white, sleeveless tunic with a high neckline made of chainmail and a shawled cape with shoulder pauldrons. She also wears a white mask around her eyes and white open-toed shoes with leg greaves. She is frequently seen carrying a bow or spear.

Personality[]

Artemis is mature, honest, and confident. She often acts as a voice of reason, both to Persephone and others. Although she worries for Persephone and wants her to understand the dangers of Olympus, she also encourages her to explore the world for herself and disagrees with Demeter's helicopter parenting. Artemis often bumps heads with men, finding them foolish and oblivious to women's feelings, but is herself largely oblivious to the predatory behavior of her own brother. She is competitive and quick to prove her potential, knowing exactly what she's good at. She may appear at first to be abrasive and intimidating but is genuine and fiercely protective of her friends. She is quick to apologize to Persephone, after she believes that she has hurt her feelings, by baking her an apology cake.

Relationships[]

Parents[]

Zeus[]

Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto. Leto was once close friends with Hera until Hera discovered Zeus affair with Leto which would unknowingly result in Artemis and her twin brother's birth once Leto was banished. Leto never revealed who fathered her children and despite Hera's initial anger over the affair, it would seem Hera never let it cloud her judgement as Hera and Zeus chose the twins to become Olympians and live on Olympus many years later.

Although he was unaware Apollo and Artemis were his children, others, including Leto, soon realized Apollo became his favorite Olympian. When Queen Niobe of Thebes claims that her family was superior to Leto's, both Artemis and Apollo killed 13 of the Queen's 14 children for insulting their mother and family. Instead of being punished for not receiving a permit beforehand, the two were given medals which further proved Zeus' favoritism. Despite this, Artemis has shown a strong hatred towards Zeus', and his brothers, many affairs and womanizing ways. Unknown to Zeus, Artemis would key his car in response to Hades unintentionally hurting Persephone.

During the last day of Persephone and Demeter's trial, Apollo reveals himself and Artemis to be Zeus' children, shocking Artemis but saddening Zeus over the discovery that Artemis was his child. Later on, Artemis makes her decision and lives in the Mortal Realm with Persephone as the Protector of Younger Women.

Leto[]

Leto is Artemis' Mother. Although it appears she cares for her daughter, she is also rather critical of her, admonishing her for having a "public meltdown." Despite this, Artemis loves her mother which is shown when Queen Niobe of Thebes claims that her family was superior to Leto's, both Artemis and Apollo killed 13 of the Queen's 14 children for insulting their mother and family.

When Leto first appears, also gaslight Artemis when she asks if she is going to believe Persephone over her own family, which causes Artemis to leave, distraught. During the last day of Persephone and Demeter's trial, Apollo reveals himself and Artemis to be Zeus' children, shocking Artemis as she was unaware of her parentage until her brother. Artemis knew that she and Apollo were lying to her all this time.

Siblings[]

Apollo[]

Apollo is Artemis’s younger twin brother who she is very close to. She greatly trusts and often defends him and his actions. Despite the two having different relationship with their mother, the two love her deeply, enough so that when Queen Niobe of Thebes claims that her family was superior to Leto's, both Artemis and Apollo killed 13 of the Queen's 14 children for insulting their mother and family. Artemis would spear one child, unlike Apollo. The two committed their act of wrath without a permit and were awarded medals for their accomplishments instead of punished.

Artemis is aware of how he can act and reprimands him when he acts out, quick to show how much she dislikes his sexist comments. Despite this, she still allows him to visit her 'No Men Allowed' house. Unknown to Artemis, the first night Apollo met Persephone, he sexual assault Persephone by going into her room while she slept. Persephone did try to tell Artemis about what Apollo did to her that night, but held back, worried it would hurt their relationship. After Artemis and Apollo talk about Persephone's relationship with Hades and Hestia bringing Persephone to tears the night before, he manipulates her into believing Persephone is not taking her duties seriously. The girls argue about Hades and leads to Persephone almost revealing the truth but decides against it as she is unsure of what she would say.

Artemis and Apollo at odds.

Later on, Artemis is still oblivious to Persephone's discomfort and dislike of him, eventually pleading with Persephone to try and be friends with him for her. Unknown to Artemis, Apollo is trying to get Persephone to marry him, especially after he discovers she is a Fertility Goddess and with her status as the descendent of an Olympian and 6 Traitors Dynasty, would evaluate his status. After some time, Persephone runs away from home after being blackmailed by Apollo with pictures of the assault which results in Artemis searching for her for days. Eventually Persephone is found but refuses to come home and tells Artemis she hates Apollo.

Artemis goes to confront him, but the argument is interrupted when their mother arrives. Apollo then lies and states that he and Persephone had a short flirtation relationship which only angers Artemis has Apollo knew full well that Persephone was a TGOEM candidate. Apollo states she was spreading rumors, so she doesn't lose her scholarship with the Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood. Artemis, overwhelmed, leaves her brother and mother. Artemis leaves, not fully convince that Apollo was telling the whole story but also doubts Persephone as Apollo is her twin brother.

Apollo and Artemis

Artemis and Apollo arguing.

This is later brought back in Episode 142, when Persephone discloses to Artemis how much she hates him. She confronts her twin in Episode 147, emotionally distraught and confused by what is happening, but is lied to again by Apollo, saying that Persephone is manipulating her, that there was only some flirtation between them, and is spreading rumors so she doesn't lose her scholarship with the Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood. Artemis, overwhelmed, leaves her brother and mother.

After this confrontation and discovering Hestia and Athena's secret relationship, Artemis goes Hermes, hoping for answers. Together, he admits that he thinks something did happen between Apollo and Persephone and while he's not sure what it is, he sees it isn't good. Artemis leaves and is seen again at the trial for Persephone while Apollo is telling reporters Zeus has given him permission to marry Persephone, which Zeus has not done.

Artemis meets Apollo in the courthouse and is curious when she sees him dressed formally but when she asks him why, he defends himself by saying he deserves to dress that way. After discovering he was kicked out by Zeus, Apollo tells her that everything he is doing is to make a better life for their family. Artemis is confused by this as she thought they already had a good life. As the first day of the trial ends, Hades recalls the twins killing Niobe's family to which Artemis reinforces that she let one child survive.

During the last day of Persephone and Demeter's trial, Apollo reveals himself and Artemis to be Zeus' children, shocking Artemis as she was unaware of her parentage unlike her brother. Later on, Artemis decides to live in the Mortal Realm to get away from her brother's and their mother's lying since she had enough of them lying to her. Artemis also knew that her brother lied to her after Persephone's disappearance.

When their coronation, welcoming them, started Zeus offered both twins one thing they desperately desired. Her brother chooses to have their mother out of exile. When it came for Artemis, tired of her twin and mother's deception, she begged her father to send her to the mortal realm to be with Persephone. It was an act that shook her twin brother and he seemed desperate to have her not leave his side. Since the time pass, it's not been shown if Persephone's revealed anything or if it affected how she sees her twin brother. After the ten-year gap, Artemis no longer wants anything to do with her brother and goes to live with Hermes instead, disclosing her location.

Athena[]

Unknown to Artemis for many years, Athena is Artemis's half-sister from Zeus. Unlike the rest of her half-siblings, Artemis and Athena have known each other for many years as they are both members of the Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood. Over the years, the two have formed a strong friendship and Artemis appears to trust her, as she was comfortable enough to vent to her about how Persephone was being treated during her visit with Demeter. Athena appears to agree with her regarding giving Persephone more freedom, indirectly encouraging Artemis to stand up to Hestia and Demeter.

Week later, Artemis discovers Hestia and Athena are dating. While Hestia tries to deny it, Athena admits it as she does not want to lie to Artemis. Artemis is upset by this as this is yet another lie and then and questions if she was the only one taking the role of an eternal maiden seriously. Despite her anger, she stays for Athena to explain themselves. Artemis would attend Persephone's trial and be seated with Hestia and Athena. When it is revealed, Thanatos had broken into their house, Athena was shocked and asked how he could do such a thing.

Hades[]

Unknown to Artemis for some time, Hades is Artemis' uncle from Zeus. Before Artemis is revealed to be Zeus' child, Artemis believed Hades to be like his brothers who had numerous affairs and hedonistic lifestyles, leading her to consequently distrusting him. When Artemis loses Persephone during the party, Persephone would end up drunk and in Hades' car as a result of a prank by Aphrodite. The only reason Hades did not return Persephone back home was because he was unaware of the fact she lived with Artemis. When she wakes up the next morning, he takes her home and while their saying goodbye, Artemis comes out and demands Persephone to get out of the car.

She warns Hades that she's watching him, but Hades explains he is innocent and had done nothing to Persephone, but Artemis does not believe him. She goes as far as bringing Persephone inside and calls him a pervert before slamming the door. When Persephone and Artemis are alone, she asks again if he touch her and Persephone assures that he did not, which was a lie as she recalls the account of contact the two had made. Artemis, however, believes her and is relieved to hear that as she believes the kings would "screw anything with a heartbeat."

When Eros arrives to apologize for his part in the prank, he quickly notices Persephone's crush on Hades which causes concern or Artemis. Hera then assigns Persephone to work in the Underworld, Artemis feels unsure about it but does not infer as it was a direct order from Hera. When Persephone comes home, Hestia is waiting for her and confronts her about an article showing Persephone leaving Hades' home the morning after the party. The following morning, Apollo and Artemis discuss the event and Apollo gets Artemis to doubt Persephone and confronts her about Hades. Artemis warns Persephone that she would not be any difference from all the other women the Kings have hurt in the past with only angers Persephone and makes her leave.

When Persephone tries to get Artemis to admit that Hades is good looking, Artemis admits that she does not find him attractive in any way. After Persephone breaks down crying over having a crush on Hades when he is in a relationship with Minthe, she grows upset and decides to key Hades' and his brother's cars as revenge.

When Hades arrives at the apartment to see Persephone, he quickly covers up the reason why he and Persephone were alone together by saying he was making a donation. Hestia invites himself inside which, making Artemis angry and has to talk to Hestia in the kitchen. Artemis explains how she cannot stand Hades and looking at him makes her body burn, actually proving this as steam was coming out of her.

Hades artemi

Artemis accuses Hades of hiding Persephone,

After Persephone goes missing, Artemis looks for her in Hades' home and claims that Hades has not only brainwashed her but has trapped her in a sex cult. Despite the insult and trashing his home in the process, Hades allows her to search for Persephone even prepares tea for her when she's done and calmed down. Although she does not trust him, she does notice his sadness and sincerest about being worried about Persephone and tells him everything she knows.

When Hades ask if she told Demeter, Artemis screams that she does not have a death wish. When Hades tells Artemis that Persephone has been unhappy lately, Artemis was quick to dismiss this until Eros could confirm Hades' statement. When Hades ask if Artemis has nothing anything as her roommate, Artemis is guilt ridden to admit she didn't and thought she was always happy. The group then comes together with the goal of finding Persephone.

Once Persephone is found by Hades and Hecate, Persephone choses to stay in the Underworld with Hades instead which upsets Artemis as she claims the two were playing house and seemingly ending Persephone's candidacy as a TGOEM member. During Persephone's trial, Artemis appears with Hestia and Athena where Hades becomes Persephone's lawyer. When Hades calls out the hypocrisy between Apollo and Artemis against Persephone as both parties did not receive a permit to commit their act of wrath, but the twins were praised and given medals while Persephone is being held accountable, Artemis quickly reinforces that she spared one of the Queen's children.

During the last day of Persephone and Demeter's trial, Apollo reveals himself and Artemis to be Zeus' children, shocking Hades and Artemis over the realization. Since the time pass, it has yet to be shown if her time with Persephone has changed her thoughts on Hades. She and Hermes participate in seeing her uncle getting married to Persephone.

Persephone[]

Artemis and persephone flashback

Artemis and Persephone at the party.

Artemis is Persephone's roommate, best friend, and aunt through her marriage to Hades, who was unknowingly Artemis' uncle. It was Artemis who helped Persephone come to live in Olympus. Realizing that Persephone's mother, Demeter, was overbearing and smothering, she stood up to her and offered Persephone a room with her in the city so that she wouldn't have to commute to college. Despite their somewhat clashing personalities, the two appear to get along well. Although Artemis wants Persephone to experience freedom away from her mother and does so by having Persephone join her at the party and giving her a cellphone despite Demeter's protest against them. Although Artemis is allowing more freedom, is also very protective of her and is often strict when reminding her of what she can and can't do as TGOEM candidate, including having men in the house.

After Hades returns Persephone back home the morning after the party, Artemis is furious and orders her to get out of his car before dragging her back inside. When Eros arrives to apologize for getting Persephone drunk and putting her in the back of Hades' car, the three of them go shopping despite Artemis initially dislike of Eros as he is the God of Love and Sex and was insisting Persephone has a crush on Hades. The two eventually end up meeting with Apollo, Artemis' twin brother, and Hermes, the latter which Persephone already knew and was friends with.

Despite this, she angrily orders Apollo to stop making Persephone uncomfortable. Tragically, Apollo would sexually assault Persephone and Persephone, feeling confused and scared, decides to not tell Artemis. Later that night, Persephone would call Hades and be on the phone with him until they fell asleep. Artemis would discover this and remain quiet despite being uncomfortable over Persephone's growing attraction to him.

After Hestia discovers an article about Persephone and Hades, Artemis attempted to calm Hestia down, but the damage was done. By the time Persephone arrives, Artemis is powerless as Hestia screams and brings Persephone to tears. The following day, Artemis becomes wary of Persephone's growing relationship with Hades, bringing up the late-night phone call, after a discussion with Apollo and is furious when she discovers Hermes in Persephone room while she changes. When discovering Hermes has already seen Persephone naked many times, as a result of the two going skinny dipping in the Mortal Realm, she orders him to leave and talks to Persephone. Artemis' apology cake.

When Persephone comes homework, Artemis makes a cake as an apologize and the girls make up, but Persephone admits to her that she does indeed have a crush on Hades, much to her disappointment. When Artemis ask her about TGOEM, Persephone reveals she plans on not acting on those feeling especially when he has a girlfriend. With Eros now there, Persephone breakdown and Artemis, feeling that Hades is just as worse as his brothers and is playing around with Persephone's feelings, leaves to key their cars. Later on, when Hades ask her if she wanted to be a TGOEM member, Persephone admits she is unsure but that she does greatly admire Artemis as she is respected and viewed as powerful.

Persephone is frustrated over this as she and Hades had confessed their feelings for one another but set boundaries from going any further. Hades, Persephone, and Artemis have no choice but to hear Hestia's presentation which seemingly puts them all to sleep.

Not long after, Artemis confronts Persephone her relationship with Apollo, sensing they don't get along, but ask her to try as he is her brother. Out of respect for Artemis, Persephone tells Apollo off when they are alone and tells him that she will not ruin his relationship with his sister by telling her the truth and she would only acknowledge him on Fridays as he comes over to see Artemis those nights. However, the plan does not last long as Apollo blackmails Persephone shortly after with pictures of the assault and drives Persephone to run away from home.

After learning that Persephone has disappeared, Eros and Hades reveal that Persephone has been struggling with many things in the last weeks, making Artemis feels intense guilt as she initially believed she was "always happy." When Persephone's act of wrath is brought to light and the warrant for her arrest is put out, Eros tells Persephone that Artemis did not come to visit her because she is a "squeaky clean Olympian" and would be obligated to bring Persephone in.

When Persephone later calls Artemis from her new phone, Artemis asks Persephone to come home, telling her that they will go to Zeus together. Persephone tries her best to be honest with Artemis and reveals to her that the reason she can't return home is because of Apollo, who she hates. She explains that she doesn't want to ruin their sibling relationship, but that she cannot be around him, although she is unable to tell Artemis what Apollo did to her. Persephone hangs up before Artemis can respond.

Artemis goes after Apollo and demands answers, but he claims the two were in a secret flirtatious relationship that has ended with Persephone making up rumors. Artemis is greatly upset with Apollo as he was aware of Persephone position as TGOEM candidate. When their Mother Leto arrives, she gaslights Artemis by getting her to ask if she would trust Persephone over her brother, causing her to leave.

Leto then tries to get Persephone to agree to marry Apollo when she visits her in the Underworld, but Persephone not only dismisses her but claims that Artemis is the only reason why she didn't summon Hades to have her removed. Unknown to Artemis, when Persephone attends her first therapy secession, she reveals she is scared to lose her friendship with Artemis if she decides to leave TGOEM.

While Leto was visiting Persephone, Artemis was trying to get answers from Hermes about Apollo and Persephone's relationship. After seemingly not getting closer, she arrives to witness Persephone's trial. When it is revealed, Thanatos had broken into their house, both goddesses express great anger over this violation. As Hades comes to Persephone's defense, he mentions Artemis and Apollo's act of wrath which was also done without a permit but unlike Persephone, faced no severe punishment and were instead rewarded with medals. She now lives in the Mortal Realm with Persephone as the Protector of Younger Women.

It has yet to be determined if Persephone ever revealed to her the truth of what she's been holding back from her. Or if it's affected their friendship. However, she and Hermes participated in Persephone's marriage to Hades confirming that her best friend is now an aunt to her and they're still on good terms with each other.

Artemis first stands against him when he arrives at her and Persephone's apartment in Episode 12, changing into her huntress form to scare him into leaving. However, she begrudgingly allows him entry after he presents apology donuts. When Eros apologizes and begins his story of Psyche, Artemis calls out Eros for all the things he did wrong such as kidnapping and lying to her for month while he argues he saved Psyche from a horrible marriage and life. They continue to argue before he breaks down crying and Persephone gets him to calm down.

Much to Artemis' anger, Eros breaks into the apartment by using the key under the mat so he could confront Persephone over her crush on Hades. The two would not meet again until Artemis breaks into Eros' home in search of Persephone when she runaway. The two work together and go to the Underworld to meet Hades who was unaware of her disappearance. Not wanting to betray Persephone's trust, he hints to Artemis that her roommate was always happy and needs more of her help.

Artemis later confronts him about what he knows about Persephone and Apollo, but he remains quiet. Artemis is furious and hurt by him keeping information to himself and states that the two of them being friends was a mistake. Eros is hurt by Artemis' words but does not cave in and stays quiet. The two would be seen at Persephone's trial but Eros is sitting by his parent and Artemis with Hestia and Athena

Friends[]

Hestia[]

Artemis and hestia 1

Artemis fears Hestia.

As fellow members of the Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood, they appear to be friendly with one another. Hestia was proud that Artemis offered Persephone a place to stay on Olympus, although she seems less lenient when it comes to allowing Persephone certain freedoms. Artemis appears upset when Hestia manipulates Persephone into giving her the coat, she received from Hades in exchange for her silence over the tabloid article. It also appears Artemis is easily bored during TGOEM meetings, often falling asleep when Hestia gives presentations.

After an emotional reunion with her mother and Apollo and Persephone's phone call, Artemis has become upset or the secrets and lies of those closest. This comes to a boiling point when she discovers Hestia and Athena are dating. While Hestia tries to deny it, Athena admits it as she does not want to lie to Artemis. Artemis is upset and questions if she was the only one taking the role of a maiden seriously. Despite her anger, she stays for Athena to explain themselves.

Artemis would attend Persephone's trial and be seated with Hestia and Athena. When it is revealed, Thanatos had broken into their house, Hestia was greatly upset over the news and said that what he did was very disrespectful. When Hades brings up how Artemis and Apollo committed an act of wrath by killing 13 of Queen Niobe's children without a permit, Hestia claims Artemis was nice enough to spare one of the Queen's children.

Hermes[]

Artemis hermes

Artemis upset with Hermes.

Hermes and Artemis are friends, but Hermes enjoys pushing her buttons, doing things to deliberately make her angry for his amusement. Artemis is shown to allow Hermes inside her house despite her "No Men Allowed" policy but this is mostly because he is almost always with Apollo. The only time she ever showed real anger towards him was when she found him in Persephone's room when she was changing, and it was revealed that he had seen Persephone naked many times before because of their skinny-dipping actives in the Mortal Realm. Artemis orders him to leave, and Hermes does so in a hurry, showing that he can be scared of her when she is upset.

After Hermes was placed under house arrest and Artemis distressed over a call from Persephone stating she couldn't stand Apollo, she arrives to speak to Hermes and he allows her inside, wanting to help her try to make sense of what is happening. Together, Hermes admits that he thinks something did happen between Apollo and Persephone and while he's not sure what it is, he sees it isn't good.

Trivia[]

  • Artemis is a Sacred Virgin of the TGOEM, having taken her vow of celibacy (possibly prior to the series).
  • When asked by Persephone if she was ever in love, Artemis sheepishly claims to have never been but Eros states it was a lie. This could be seen as a reference to Orion, Artemis' hunting companion in Greek mythology.
  • Artemis is the only member of TGOEM to not be dating despite their vows. Hestia and Athena have been secretly dating for some time and Persephone, although a candidate, is fated to become the Queen of the Underworld when she marries Hades.
